Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5 feet and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

Requirements for successful completion:

• Complete the swim test of 100 yards using front crawl or breast-stroke, tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs, retrieve a 10-pound weight from the bottom of the pool, and exit the pool without using steps or a ladder.
• Attend all class sessions.
• Demonstrate competency in skills, activities, and three scenarios.
• Correctly answer at least 80% on the final written exam.

Who: For swimmers who are at least 15 years old.  You must be able to swim 100 yards front crawl and breast-stroke.

What: You will receive an American Red Cross Universal certificate of Lifeguarding (Shallow water)/First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer valid for 2 years.

Fee: $300, free for YMCA employees.
